Encouraging New Meta Study: Qigong and Sleep Quality
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……….
How are you sleeping these days? Insomnia affects most of us from time to time. If chronic it can feel like a real curse! That’s why I was pleased (but not surprised) to find a recent meta-analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials that showed significant improvements in sleep quality for folks who practice Qigong.
The study found the Eight Brocades form was most effective. This conclusion is a bit preliminary in that other Qigong forms and their effect on specific populations weren’t addressed. But here’s the take-away: the Eight Brocades are simple. They take less than 15 minutes to do. This supports the foundational principle that whether we’re focused on strength training, flexibility, healthy eating, or balance skill, it is the ease and consistency of your practice that bring results.
Here’s good news: if you study Qigong with me, you have already learned all eight movements of the Eight Brocades, just not all at once or in the traditional order. For example, “Shooting the Arrow” is one of the Brocades, as is “Nod Head Wag Tail”. I thought you might enjoy learning the actual form in its traditional order, and so that’s what I look forward to teaching this week. It’s simple, short, and yet complete. If that meta study is correct, we’ll all sleep like babies!
