If Resolutions Make You Twitchy …

Here we are, spinning toward the last day of 2025.  How do you feel about making New Year’s resolutions? Personally, the word “resolution” makes me twitchy: it feels so strict and limiting, maybe even punitive. When I found Qigong, my eyes were opened to the concept of continual opportunities for new beginnings, not limited to New Year’s Eve. It’s called working with “Yi,” the intentional mind that guides energy. “Your mind leads the qi” is a slogan I’ve come to embrace. We focus our mind, we breathe, we move, and by doing so, we activate an ever-renewing process inside ourselves, one that unfolds naturally and responds to life as it changes.

In last week’s newsletter I described the relaxing, grounding winter solstice meditation practice called “Gods Playing in the Clouds,” where we circle our hands downward, with smooth, continual gestures. As we move, we imagine releasing old energy out, into the earth beneath our feet. If you’d like to take this practice to an even deeper place, one that might feel especially valuable as the calendar turns to a new year, here’s how:  Once you’ve done the movements described above long enough to let go of any jumpy, distracted, or stagnant sensations, begin to turn your attention inward, to the quiet, peaceful place you’ve discovered within. From this place of inner stillness, perhaps a tiny glimmer of a seed will become apparent. It could be subtle. Maybe it’s not even something you can define or describe. Perhaps this little seed points to a shift or transformation that’s already begun within you.  Or maybe it’s shedding light on a new direction in which to grow, or a potential accomplishment on your horizon, one that’s not yet clear to you. Stay with that for as long as you’d like. See where it takes you.

Our Qigong practices are all about nurturing those little seeds of growth and transformation within. This is an ongoing process as deep, genuine, and powerful as nature itself. I look forward to continuing to discover and share with you more of these energy-cultivating practices during the next year.  Who knows what will grow out of it? Happy 2026, may it be a healthy, vital, and transformative one for each of you!
