It is content with the low places that people distain.
Thus it is like the Tao.
In thinking, keep to the simple.
In conflict, be fair and generous.
In governing, don’t try to control.
In work, do what you enjoy.
In family life, be completely present.
Tao Te Ching Verse 8
For a while now, I’ve read and attempted to distill the wisdom of the Tao Te Ching. Slowly, I’ve begun to grasp how simple its wise advice really is. Simple, but not always easy to apply, of course. But that’s kind of the point: to discover the Tao: the water-like ease that comes from acting with simplicity, clarity, and relaxation. Like water, I allow myself to “flow around” the more enigmatic and puzzling verses. Just this morning I realized that by doing so, I’m applying the 70 percent rule! (When practicing Qigong, use only 70 percent of the effort you know you could expend while moving.)
Yesterday in class we practiced incorporating the quality of flowing water into our movements, to bring flexibility to our joints, energy to our brains, and calm, cool, comfort to our hearts. So many participants asked for a copy of the session that I decided to post it on my YouTube channel (click here), where you can view it for free as often as you’d like. It will be available by the end of today. Enjoy!
Remember: whatever is happening around you, it helps to stay cool, relaxed, generous, and tranquil as a clear mountain stream.
